Only one flaw

12/9/2018 by Robert

An interesting and unusual candle that, for the most part, works as described. The only problem I've had is with the wax coil. When lighting the candle, it usually goes out and has to be relit 2 or 3 times. After that, it burns as a normal candle and goes out when it burns down to the metal clasp. Perhaps I have a defective wax coil?

Styrofoam packaging mess

12/7/2018 by Debbie

I appreciate that Grommet obtained this product from Eclipse Candle By the Hour, but since it is sold through Grommet, they and their customers should know that this item comes with a mess. I could not in good conscience send this to my friend the way it came. It was wrapped in cellophane, but that protection was broken, leaving it open to the breakdown of the styrofoam pebbles that engulfed the product. I had to unwrap it from the cellophane and brush it off. It was so messy it took me 10 minutes with a paint brush. Then I had to find another box to mail it in, as the interior of the Eclipse box was full of degraded styrofoam material. Other than that, it seems to be a good product. The aroma of honey (due to the beeswax) is heavenly. Hope my buddy likes it! Since I hadn't lit the candle, I left a rating of 3, since I really don't know how my friend found the candle to burn.

It looks great but it doesn’t burn long

11/30/2018 by Ivy

It’s really cool looking, but it’s hard to thread the candle through the clamp and doesn’t burn very long before it extinguished. I can’t believe it will last for 48 hours.

I bought the horizontal one.

I wanted to love this!

This candle holder is beautiful and such a fun conversation piece. The wax is perfect in pliability and while desireably unscented while burning, the candle itself has a soft yummy beeswax scent. So here’s why I’m only giving it 3 seemed to be burning really quickly, so I measured out 2 inches (the max recommended) and set a timer for 40 minutes (burn time is stated as 20 minutes per inch). The candle was out with just over 9 minutes left in the timer. 40-9=31 minutes on an advertised 40 minute burn time; so only burning for an average of fifteen and a half minutes per inch, rather than twenty. I did a second test at 1 inch and set the timer for 20 minutes. It fared a little better this time, with the flame extinguishing just after 16 minutes. So, it’s up to individual preference as to whether that matters or not.

Unique, but.

This truly is a unique candle . The one reservation I have is that it doesn't burn long. It suggests that you only raise 2 inches above the cup. That 2 inches burns in less than an hour. Therefore, you have to raise more of the candle above the cup and relight. It's difficult to open the clamp and raise more of the candle.

We really haven't even li the candle yet. it is more of a conversation piece at this stage.
However my wife really like the way it looks.

Nice.... But

I love the design of the candle, but it recommends that you don't have any longer than 2 inches above the cup. That 2 inches extinguishes so fast. Since it extinguishes so fast that means you have to keep extending the candle and relight again and again.

Still not 100 % in love

10/14/2018 by Amy

I love the look of it, but I haven't figured out an easy way to add more length after it's burned down. Usually the wax has hardened and sticks to the spring-loaded clamp. It's hard to get it loose from the clamp to move it up, plus since it's beeswax, I'm afraid of breaking it. It's just not easy.

Need to be mindful of shipping in warm weather

6/7/2018 by sharps84

I purchased two candles, one for daughter and one for myself. They arrived several weeks ago which was already warm weather here in Georgia. When I opened them, the candle hadn't melted, but it had gotten soft enough that it stuck to itself and was difficult to unroll. This caused the edges of the candle to be rough where it was pulled apart. Also, one of the legs on the tray is about 1/2" shorter than the other three so it won't sit level on a table. I really like the candles, they are unique and the sort of thing that I'm drawn to. Sad that they have issues. Advise to watch warm temperatures while shipping and do better quality control to catch issues like the leg too short. Disappointed, this looked like a great gift for all sorts of occasions.

Great look; less than great to use

I bought the horizontal version. It looks great on my mantle, but the coiled candle is hard to unspool--fear of cracking the wax--and the candle gets stuck in the clamp. Beeswax candles are somewhat sticky, so this may be unavoidable.

“Self-Timed” Beeswax Candles

This coiled beeswax candle lets you set how long it burns. The wick burns 20 minutes per every inch that you pull through the clip, then it’ll put itself out. Its beeswax and cotton wick is eco-friendly, too.

The design was part of the 1600s dating scene. Known as a “courting candle”, protective parents would light one to limit the time prospective suitors could spend with their daughters.

Our culture did away with the outdated ritual, but Candles by the Hour kept the beautiful, self-extinguishing design.
