Very cool candle. Great conversation piece.

Having second thoughts

1/16/2019 by Mary

I was delighted the first time I used this candle. It was a Christmas gift from my son who knows how much I like beeswax candles.

It had worked well several times with a Bic lighter, but this last time I had a very difficult time lighting it trying to use a match. I went through ten matches with no success! Eventually I was able to light it after getting a new Bic lighter (the old one had played out.). Using the matches seemed to melt wax around the wick, but the wick never lit.

I have no idea why the wick would not light with matches. It was frustrating.

Great gift

I viewed this item online and thought it was very interesting. The history of using the candle for parents warning their young folks that time was up and dates need to leave when the candle goes out was funny. Anyway, it was my sister’s birthday so I purchased it for her. For whatever reason, she didn’t call to thank me, I had to call to ensure she received it.

I like it a lot

This has been a lot of fun for me. I love the vintage look and feel and it is great for decor as well as for emergencies. I have been just enjoying having it lit and the ambiance. A couple of issues, my candle was very stiff and not as pliable as it should be for this, and the clasp is very hard to open to insert the candle. Good because you don't want it loose as if the candle came out or slipped it would be a definite fire hazard, but definitely hurts your hands/fingers prying it open. The beeswax candles have a strong honey like scent so that is nice. Another down side, I wanted the 80 hour but could not find replacement candles for that size, so I got the 48 hour. Word of advice, if you sell the 80 hr, you need to have the replacement candles available for that too.

This is smaller than I anticipated, but definitely unique.

Attractive and fussy

2/27/2018 by Alan

Looks good. Burns well, no smoke or drip. Don't think it burns one inch of candle per hour; it burns more (but I haven't actually timed it). Biggest negative is it's hard to feed the candle as it burns down. The wax is pretty stiff, and the bend from the coil is pretty severe, at least when the candle is new.

Quality of merchandise

When I received the package the box was dented and slightly ripped. The styrofoam was broke and in pieces and the candle was misshapen. It was oval instead of round. I was not happy with the purchase.

PI love the style of the candle

I have trouble with the mechanism that feeds the wax through. It’s to hard to open.

Only one flaw

12/9/2018 by Robert

An interesting and unusual candle that, for the most part, works as described. The only problem I've had is with the wax coil. When lighting the candle, it usually goes out and has to be relit 2 or 3 times. After that, it burns as a normal candle and goes out when it burns down to the metal clasp. Perhaps I have a defective wax coil?

Styrofoam packaging mess

12/7/2018 by Debbie

I appreciate that Grommet obtained this product from Eclipse Candle By the Hour, but since it is sold through Grommet, they and their customers should know that this item comes with a mess. I could not in good conscience send this to my friend the way it came. It was wrapped in cellophane, but that protection was broken, leaving it open to the breakdown of the styrofoam pebbles that engulfed the product. I had to unwrap it from the cellophane and brush it off. It was so messy it took me 10 minutes with a paint brush. Then I had to find another box to mail it in, as the interior of the Eclipse box was full of degraded styrofoam material. Other than that, it seems to be a good product. The aroma of honey (due to the beeswax) is heavenly. Hope my buddy likes it! Since I hadn't lit the candle, I left a rating of 3, since I really don't know how my friend found the candle to burn.

“Self-Timed” Beeswax Candles

This coiled beeswax candle lets you set how long it burns. The wick burns 20 minutes per every inch that you pull through the clip, then it’ll put itself out. Its beeswax and cotton wick is eco-friendly, too.

The design was part of the 1600s dating scene. Known as a “courting candle”, protective parents would light one to limit the time prospective suitors could spend with their daughters.

Our culture did away with the outdated ritual, but Candles by the Hour kept the beautiful, self-extinguishing design.
